With strong winds blowing in from the east and a south-westerly swell rolling through, we knew today\u2019s conditions would bring some serious turbulence to the Bremer Canyon. Luckily, our 24-metre purpose-built vessel, designed for the wild Southern Ocean, is made to handle days like this. The beauty of this design means guests can sit back, enjoy the ride, and experience an unforgettable expedition to see wild Orca \u2014 no matter the turbulence.<\/p>\n
As we arrived at the hotspot, familiar fins cut through the surface. El Notcho, Cookie, Oreo, and their pod were nearby, although they seemed momentarily distracted \u2014 scanning the depths below in search of unsuspecting prey.
\nClose behind, Nibbles and their pod powered through the ocean. Watching Orca surge through the sea never loses its magic. Their effortless strength pushes aside the water like it\u2019s nothing, even on a day full of ocean turbulence.<\/p>\n
To find some relief from the unsettled sea, we moved westward, away from the heart of the turbulence. Here, the ocean delivered another surprise \u2014 a large pod of Pilot Whales.<\/p>\n
Just like the day before, these cheeky whales remained tightly grouped. Around 40 individuals, including mothers and tiny calves barely half a metre in length, exploded out of the water together. Some of the calves were so young, they still displayed their newborn foetal folds \u2014 a special sight to witness.<\/p>\n
Back at the hotspot, the huntress Split Tip made her presence known. With two sub-adults trailing behind her, they began interacting with the vessel, surfing the swell and racing beneath the bow. Moments later, they would shoot out behind us, thrilling everyone onboard.<\/p>\n
These types of playful encounters cut through any ocean turbulence, leaving excitement and awe in their wake.<\/p>\n
To top off an already action-packed day, our onboard photographers \u2014 keen birders in their own right \u2014 had been hoping all week to glimpse the elusive Barau\u2019s Petrel.<\/p>\n
With just five minutes left in the expedition, sharp-eyed deckhand Billy spotted a flash of white off our stern. It was the much-desired Barau\u2019s Petrel! To everyone\u2019s delight, the rare seabird circled the boat several times, offering fantastic photo opportunities and leaving our seabird enthusiasts absolutely ecstatic.<\/p>\n
