A Name with a Maritime Past<\/h4>\n

In 1801, French explorer Nicolas Baudin sailed along this stretch of coast aboard the ship G\u00e9ographe. He named the bay after his vessel, and the name has remained for over two centuries. European explorers found its protected waters ideal for anchorage. Long before their arrival, the Traditional Owners, the Wadandi people, lived in harmony with these waters, relying on its rich marine resources for thousands of years.<\/p>\n

A Seasonal Gathering Place for Whales<\/h4>\n

From August to the end of November, Geographe Bay becomes a whale nursery. Humpback whales, travelling south from their breeding grounds in the Kimberley, stop here with their newborn calves. The bay\u2019s calm conditions offer safety for young whales learning essential survival skills. Watching a calf surface beside its mother, or playfully slap the water, is an unforgettable experience.<\/p>\n

In late spring, another ocean giant makes an appearance. Blue whales<\/a>, the largest animals ever known to have lived. This large cetaceans are considered an endangered species, occasionally entering Geographe Bay.
