Orca<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our 2024\u201325 Bremer Canyon Killer Whale Expedition season has drawn to a close \u2014 and what a season it was.<br \/>\nOperating from December to April, this year brought an exceptional range of encounters with orca, pilot whales, sperm whales and more.<br \/>\nEvery day held promise: calm waters, high anticipation, and a chance to witness powerful predators patrolling the Southern Ocean.<br \/>\nGuests travelled from across Australia and around the world, all seeking that spine-tingling moment when Southern Ocean orca appear.<\/p>\n<h2>Rare Southern Ocean Orca &#8211; orca<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The headline moment of the season arrived in April, when <a href=\"https:\/\/antarcticsun.usap.gov\/science\/2853\/\">Type C Antarctic orca<\/a> surfaced not once, but twice.<br \/>\nThis rarely seen ecotype lives among Antarctic pack ice, and sightings this far north are almost unheard of.<br \/>\nTheir pale colour, slanted eyepatches and compact bodies quickly set them apart from our familiar Bremer orca population.<br \/>\nWe first spotted them on 17 April, then again on the 20th \u2014 in two completely different parts of the canyon.<br \/>\nThese Southern Ocean orca moved in tight groups, surfacing in synchronised harmony to the delight of all onboard.<\/p>\n<h2>Southern Ocean Orca Predation Events &#8211; On Edge<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_40138\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40138\" orca<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beyond rare sightings, this season delivered unforgettable predation events that showcased the orca\u2019s intelligence and hunting coordination.<br \/>\nOn several occasions, guests witnessed orca working in pods to pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/beaked-whale\">beaked whales<\/a> or large squid near the shelf edge.<br \/>\nMatriarchs led the way while younger animals flanked the prey, using fluke slaps and sudden bursts of speed.<br \/>\nThese high-energy moments left passengers breathless and revealed just how sophisticated Southern Ocean calf<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the orca were our main focus, they certainly were not alone in the Bremer Canyon this year.<br \/>\nWe encountered long-finned pilot whales, often in pods of 40 or more, socialising and approaching the vessel with curiosity.<br \/>\nTheir spyhops, tail slaps, and unique vocalisations created a playful contrast to the calculated movements of orca.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species\/sperm-whale\">Sperm whales<\/a> made dramatic appearances, lifting their tails as they dove deep into the nutrient-rich waters to forage.<br \/>\nEven the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-09\/pack-of-orcas-attack-kill-pygmy-blue-whale-wa-south-coast\/105152854\">pygmy blue whale<\/a> made a rare showing, its immense body gliding oceanic sunfish, tuna, and soaring seabirds including wandering albatross.<br \/>\nSouthern Ocean orca were often accompanied by other marine predators, adding depth and variety to every sighting.<br \/>\nNo two days were the same, and passengers experienced a rare glimpse into the complexity of open-ocean ecosystems.<\/p>\n<h2> Weather and a Better Vessel Enhanced Every Experience<\/h2>\n<div regularly observed<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We were fortunate to enjoy mostly calm seas and mild winds for much of the peak expedition period.<br \/>\nEven during swellier weeks, our custom-built vessel, the Alison Maree, ensured guests remained dry, safe, and comfortable.<br \/>\nUpgrades between seasons have continued to improve onboard comfort, including more seating, enhanced catering and better wildlife viewing space.<br \/>\nOur crew worked hard to create a welcoming and professional atmosphere, even during the season\u2019s longest days offshore.<\/p>\n<h3> Crew and Curious Guests Made the experts who shared real-time insights and observations with every guest.<br \/>\nThey answered questions, shared orca identification charts, and helped guests better understand the behaviour they were witnessing.<br \/>\nThe enthusiasm of passengers added so much \u2014 every gasp, cheer and even the screams of joy made this season one to remember.<\/p>\n<h3> Orcas to Augusta: The Journey
