{"id":18574,"date":"2022-01-09T14:35:46","date_gmt":"2022-01-09T06:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naturalistecharters.com.au\/?p=18574"},"modified":"2025-04-15T15:51:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T07:51:38","slug":"bremer-bay-orca-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naturalistecharters.dilatevps1.cloudsites.net.au\/old\/blogs\/bremer-bay-orca-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Encounters on the Bremer Canyon Killer Whale Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 data-start=\"126\" data-end=\"202\">Wild Encounters on the Bremer Canyon Killer Whale Tour \u2013 9.01.2022<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"204\" data-end=\"324\">The wind roared overnight, calming in the morning and setting the stage for an action-packed day on the <strong data-start=\"281\" data-end=\"316\">Bremer Canyon killer whale tour<\/strong>. \ud83c\udf0a\ud83d\udc33<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"606\">Our vessel, <strong data-start=\"338\" data-end=\"354\">Alison-Maree<\/strong>, is purpose-built for the <strong data-start=\"381\" data-end=\"399\">Southern Ocean<\/strong>, where storm swells can reach <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"443\">12 metres<\/strong>! Today\u2019s <strong data-start=\"453\" data-end=\"472\">2.5-metre swell<\/strong> made for an exciting start. By midday, the ocean calmed, and the sun shone brightly, allowing crystal-clear views of the <strong data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"603\">orcas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"726\">Above us, seabirds circled, while below, <strong data-start=\"649\" data-end=\"658\">orcas<\/strong> scanned the depths, playing out the classic <strong data-start=\"703\" data-end=\"723\">hotspot scenario<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"895\"><strong data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"753\">Split Tip and her pod<\/strong> have been here every day since the season began. Today, they were actively hunting, though no prey surfaced! Their big hunt is yet to come.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"1177\">Two <a href=\"https:\/\/whalescientists.com\/baby-orcas-orange\/\"><strong data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"916\">young orcas<\/strong><\/a>, both around <strong data-start=\"930\" data-end=\"947\">two years old<\/strong>, stole the show at lunchtime. They surfed the swell, porpoised out of the water, and playfully pushed each other. One calf had <strong data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1091\">mottled skin<\/strong>\u2014possibly from bacteria or sunburn. We sent images to <strong data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1161\">orca experts<\/strong> for analysis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1382\">This playful behavior is essential for young <strong data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1233\">orcas<\/strong>. It helps them build strength, fitness, and social bonds with their pod. These moments make the <strong data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1365\">Bremer Canyon killer whale tour<\/strong> truly special.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1623\">At <strong data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1411\">Naturaliste Charters<\/strong>, we welcome <strong data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1450\">marine biology interns<\/strong> each season to assist with <strong data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1497\">data collection<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"1501\" data-end=\"1518\">Bremer Canyon<\/strong>. This week, we were joined by the enthusiastic <strong data-start=\"1566\" data-end=\"1582\">Roz Kuliukas<\/strong>, who shared her incredible experience:<\/p>\n<h3>A Word From Our Marine Biologist Intern<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1781\">&#8220;Hello (and goodbye) from Roz! After an unforgettable week, my <strong data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1727\">marine biologist internship<\/strong> has ended. I\u2019m beyond grateful for this experience!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1783\" data-end=\"2011\">Each day onboard the <strong data-start=\"1804\" data-end=\"1839\">Bremer Canyon killer whale tour<\/strong> has been unique, packed with adventure and learning. Seeing <strong data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"1942\">El Notcho, Cookie, Oreo, and Split Tip<\/strong> frequently was amazing. By today, I could even name them on sight!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2147\">At the start of the week, I knew little about <strong data-start=\"2059\" data-end=\"2068\">orcas<\/strong>, and now I\u2019m completely obsessed. Every day felt like the <strong data-start=\"2127\" data-end=\"2144\">best day EVER<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2374\">I\u2019ve gained hands-on experience in <strong data-start=\"2184\" data-end=\"2247\">data collection, ID photography, and observational research<\/strong>, which has been invaluable. More importantly, I\u2019ve lived the <strong data-start=\"2309\" data-end=\"2322\">dream job<\/strong> of a marine biologist on an <strong data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2371\">eco-tourism boat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2582\">A huge thank you to the <strong data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2429\">Naturaliste Charters team<\/strong> for mentoring me and sharing this incredible marine environment.
