ORCA HAT<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Hi everyone! My name\u2019s Eva and I\u2019ve been lucky enough to be on board Naturaliste Charters as the marine intern\u00a0<\/span><\/span>all of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It\u2019s my first time in Bremer AND seeing orcas and it has (almost) literally blown my mind. I am so stoked to have had this opportunit<\/span><\/span>y to see all the unbelievable creatures that live in this region and to meet such incredible, friendly and knowledgeable crew and customers\u00a0<\/span><\/span>every day<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Today was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>absolutely unreal<\/span><\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>We had beautiful weather \u2013 loads of sunshine and just enough swell for us to be positive we were going to see some orcas.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Energy was high on board, with anticipation building on the ride out to the hotspot. Before we knew it, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>yell came down, \u201cBlows – 11 o\u2019clock!\u201d Everyone rushed to get a view of what we might be seeing this morning<\/span><\/span>\u00a0then, \u201cMore blows \u2013 2 o\u2019clock!\u201d. Orca, and two pods of them!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>We headed towards the nearest pod and were greeted b<\/span><\/span>y\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kodj<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the big bull with the females and a young calf!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>he calf swam towards the boat and dove under<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 we all ran towards the stern of the boat, but they were teasing us and popped back up at our bow.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Before long, we were joined by more orca, with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Cookie\u2019s resident pod heading into the area to dive with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kodj<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and Co<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>While most people on board were watching the action<\/span><\/span>, enthralled with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>synchronised<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>behaviour<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of the two pods,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the crew were constantly scanning the water and no<\/span><\/span>ticed at least\u00a0<\/span><\/span>3<\/span><\/span>\u00a0other pods in alignment with us, all heading west.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Before we knew it, the pods around the boat started surging<\/span><\/span>! Conversation stopped, and after a period of silence, everyone began<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>specualting<\/span><\/span>\u00a0what the pods may be hunting. We saw big bird swirls in the distance, indicating that there might be something big being taken down. After a chase, the po<\/span><\/span>ds\u00a0<\/span><\/span>dove<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and we thought the mystery was about\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to be revealed! After a period of big dives, we saw Split Tip and her pod pop up from the depths, which\u00a0<\/span><\/span>meant we were right in the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>centre<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of things! The birds began squabbling<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and we were all squinting to see what they had in their mouths. After a few more dives, the pods split up and began moving slowly apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>We were stumped \u2013 had they failed in their hunt? Or had they just been teasing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>us?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Then, we saw a huge hunk of squid floating on the surface of the water \u2013 we pulled it aboard and identified it as a red arrow<\/span><\/span>\u00a0squid! THAT\u2019S what the orca had been hunting below us!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We decided to give\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pods a break that we\u2019d been watching<\/span><\/span>\u00a0over the morning<\/span><\/span>, and within 20 minutes of leaving them, we saw another big group with THREE huge bull dorsal fins!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Slim Shady<\/span><\/span>, Chalky and Maleko\u00a0<\/span><\/span>who\u2019s\u00a0pods<\/span><\/span>\u00a0were all hanging out together. It was\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pretty special<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to see such a large amount of orca surfacing to breath all tog<\/span><\/span>ether.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>We thought the day couldn\u2019t possibly get better than this, and were thinking about heading back in, with \u201cLast drinks!\u201d called around the boat, when ANOTHER pod headed over to us! And\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it seemed they really wanted to put on a show for us all! We had multiple orcas diving under our boat and coming up along our side, with even the big bulls\u00a0<\/span><\/span>getting involved!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In all the excitement, we lost a camera cover over the back of the boat and mentally noted to head back for it once the orca<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0dove again.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>But the orcas had other ideas<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 with one coming up below to wear it as a hat!\u00a0<\/span><\/span>As the pods began moving away, a juvenile swung around for one last inquisitive wave just below the surface at our\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stern.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>As we started heading in, looking around the boat, you couldn\u2019t see a face without a huge grin on it. Such an incredible day!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I\u2019ve still got one day left here and every day just keeps topping the day before! I\u2019m so excited for what tomorrow may bring.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
